Why Does My Boiler Pressure Keep Dropping?

One pressure top-up may follow radiator bleeding or routine work. If the gauge keeps falling, the system is losing water or a component is not controlling pressure correctly, and repeated topping-up is not a repair.

What the symptoms can tell you

A loss of heat, pressure or hot-water capacity is not a diagnosis by itself. Useful evidence includes whether the problem affects heating, hot water or both; whether it is constant or intermittent; and whether a display, gauge, discharge pipe or nearby component shows a change.

Common causes to investigate

Check the pressure only when the system is in the condition stated by the manufacturer, usually cold. Look for damp, staining, corrosion or repeated drips, and note how quickly the gauge falls. Do not remove the boiler casing or tighten internal components.

Dry the area first, then check it again under normal operating conditions. The timing and first point of fresh moisture are more useful than the final spread of the stain.

  • Small leaks around radiator valves, towel rails, visible pipe joints or under the boiler. Operate it gently and confirm that flow actually stops; a seized or passing valve should be repaired under controlled conditions, not forced during an emergency.
  • A hidden leak beneath floors, inside walls or on underfloor-heating circuits.
  • Water discharged through the pressure-relief pipe outside. Compare more than one outlet and note whether the change is constant or demand-related. Avoid adjusting pressure controls until the incoming supply and system type are understood.
  • An expansion-vessel or pressure-relief valve fault.
  • Pressure lost after bleeding radiators or other heating work.

  1. Note fault codes, gauge readings and exactly when the symptom appears before resetting anything.
  2. Check only normal user controls, programmed times and accessible isolation positions described by the manufacturer.
  3. Look for visible water, staining or discharge outside, but do not remove a boiler or cylinder casing.

Vaillant warns not to keep repressurising when the pressure drops immediately, as a significant leak or component fault may be present. Work on a gas appliance or its flue must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that appliance category. Unvented hot-water cylinders also have safety controls that require appropriately competent work.
