Radiator Cold at the Top, Bottom or All Over?

The position of a cold area is a useful clue. It can help distinguish trapped air from sludge, poor circulation, an incorrectly set valve or a heating system that needs balancing.

The symptom is the starting point rather than the answer. Record when it happens, what else changes at the same time and whether the condition is getting worse. Those details help separate a local fitting fault from a wider supply, drainage or heating problem.

What the symptoms can tell you

Hot-water and heating symptoms depend heavily on the system fitted. A combi boiler, vented cylinder, unvented cylinder and point-of-use heater store and control energy in different ways, so advice that ignores the system type can be misleading or unsafe.

What the cold pattern may mean

If you bleed a radiator, switch the heating off and allow it to cool first. Open the bleed valve slowly, catch drips and close it when water flows steadily. Afterwards, check the boiler pressure against its manual.

Operate it gently and confirm that flow actually stops; a seized or passing valve should be repaired under controlled conditions, not forced during an emergency.

  • Cold at the top, warmer below: trapped air is likely. Bleeding may restore circulation. A trap needs an intact water seal and a clear, correctly ventilated waste route. Refilling a dry trap may stop an occasional smell, but a recurring odour needs diagnosis.
  • Warm at the top, cold at the bottom: sludge or debris may be restricting flow through the lower waterways. Compare more than one outlet and note whether the change is constant or demand-related. Avoid adjusting pressure controls until the incoming supply and system type are understood.
  • One radiator completely cold: check that the thermostatic and lockshield valves are open; a stuck valve or local blockage may be involved.
  • Several distant radiators slow to warm: the system may be out of balance or have a wider circulation problem. Identify the UK system type before applying generic advice. Stored, instantaneous, vented and sealed systems use different controls and have different competence requirements.
  • Every radiator cold: check the heating controls, boiler display and system pressure before assuming each radiator has failed. Limit checks to normal user controls and visible information. Gas, combustion and internal appliance work belongs to a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

  3. Note fault codes, gauge readings and exactly when the symptom appears before resetting anything.
  4. Check only normal user controls, programmed times and accessible isolation positions described by the manufacturer.
  5. Look for visible water, staining or discharge outside, but do not remove a boiler or cylinder casing.

  • Using an unqualified person for work on gas appliances or safety controls on an unvented cylinder.
  • Applying American tank-water-heater instructions to a UK boiler or cylinder arrangement.
  • Opening appliance cases, altering combustion components or defeating a safety device.
  • Repeatedly topping up boiler pressure without investigating where the sealed-system water is going.

If you smell gas, suspect combustion fumes or a carbon-monoxide alarm operates, leave the area, avoid switches or flames and follow the National Gas Emergency Service advice.

Once the immediate fault is understood, use the findings to reduce the chance of a repeat.

  • Use appropriate water treatment and system cleaning only after the cause and system condition are assessed.
  • Follow the appliance maker's service and maintenance schedule and keep the manual available.
  • Check heating performance before winter rather than waiting for the first cold spell.
  • Investigate small leaks, pressure changes and new noises while the system is still operating.
